Know About Molded EPP Foam Applications

What is EPP

EPP (Expanded polypropylene) is an engineered plastic foam material. By combining polypropylene resin with magic dust, and applying heat, pressure and CO2 in an autoclave, the material is formed into small plastic beads. These small, closed-cell foam beads are injected into a steam chest to create parts custom moulded into complex shapes using steam heat & pressure. EPP foam beads raw material is widely known as ARPRO® which is manufactured by JSP, the global leader in producing & supplying EPP beads material.
Properties of EPP
EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) is a highly versatile closed-cell bead foam that provides a unique range of properties, including outstanding energy absorption, multiple impact resistance, thermal insulation, buoyancy, water and chemical resistance, exceptionally high strength to weight ratio and 100% recyclability.
Why choose EPP
EPP products have excellent shockproof capabilities, high rebounding speed after distortion, good heating, chemical and oil enduring performance and good heat insulation. Also, the weight of EPP is light. It can greatly reduce the weight of packed goods. EPP is a safe raw material. It can be recycled and is naturally biodegradable without causing white pollution.
Advantages of packaging products made of EPP
Rapid assembly of components with various types of complex geometric shapes
Ability to produce hybrid components
Weight reduction
High energy absorption and cushioning properties
High temperature resistance
Environmentally friendly because of low emissions and recyclability
Reusable packaging and transport containers made of EPP
When compared to other foam materials, EPP is extremely suitable for reusable packaging and transport containers. Its ability to retain its shape after static and dynamic loading, combined with its resistance to chemicals, its effective impact resistance performance and low weight make EPP ideal for such applications. Dependent on the loading, it can regularly handle a hundred or more transport cycles. In this way, EPP helps in reducing packaging materials and costs.
Due to the high heat resistance, EPP products can be sterilised, which is in particular practical for medical applications and food containers. EPP provides outstanding thermal insulation for applications where food, medical supplies and other temperature sensitive products require protection. The EPP containers are perfectly thermal insulating, mainly in a temperature range from -40 °C up to +120 °C. Loss of temperature is low, so the boxes are ideal for the transport of temperature sensitive food items and ready to eat meals. EPP containers is the best protective packaging and transporting choice in the Cold Chain,Catering and Fast Food delivery industry because of its ability to keep the cold stuff cool and the hot stuff hot.
Electronics and optical packaging made of EPP
The high level of recovery properties virtually predestines EPP for use in the electronics packaging industry, EPP lends itself to the protection of sensitive electrical components and devices or as containers and carriers for transport. Tailor designed EPP boxes, EPP trays and EPP pallets can be reused for years and can be transported in an easy and environmentally friendly manner.
For the transport packaging of conductive strips, PCB modules, LCD panels, photograph optical glasses etc, which require high demand for anti-static environment situation, they are also anti-static EPP material available. To meet the market demands, these products can be made with various types of conductive surfaces.
Medical and pharmaceutical packaging made of EPP
In the pharmaceutical and medical industry, EPP has been approved to be a good packaging solution to protect medical devices, instruments, vials and other sensitive, fragile components.Products such as medicines, prostheses and hygienic products place particularly high demands on packaging, for sterility, protection, temperature-control and security which can be met by EPP. The custom-molded EPP packaging provides both thermal management and protection when shipping lifesaving products such as medicines, organs, test serums and live tissue.
What’s more, EPP also works well as an interior chassis for some medical devices and equipment.A key benefit of EPP is that it can be molded into complex shapes without losing its resiliency. Components such as tubes, pumps, circuit boards, fans, and power supplies are simply snapped into various channels and cavities that are molded into the EPP chassis. Then the EPP foam serves as a mechanism to assemble the medical device.Using molded EPP foam to create a chassis that holds the components securely in place offers significant benefits to medical manufacturers that are willing to change their approach to medical product design.
Technical parts made of EPP
The properties of EPP allow it to be a versatile building material that can perform more than one task at a time: it can serve as a packaging material, a housing or as shock protection, but also as heat and sound insulation in, for instance, electronic equipment and heating accessories. In devices and when building electronic equipment, it is possible to use completely new installation methods.
Automotive parts made of EPP
A light weight, in connection with high energy absorption and favorable deformation behavior of EPP, are excellent conditions for safety related components in vehicle construction.
Many types of molded EPP foam are used in automotive applications. Automotive industry is a very specific branch with a high demand on quality and precision. Due to the outstanding properties, the parts from EPP produced for this industry fulfill not only these requirements, but much more. Automotive parts from EPP are made in different shapes and sizes. They have an excellent energy absorbance and improve the acoustic inside a car. The most EPP application in the car are energy absorbers for bumpers, door pads, crash pads or toolboxes. EPP manages impact energy by absorbing it, then returning to shape. It is ideal for multiple impact protection such as vehicle crash applications, and is widely used in automotive interiors to improve passenger safety for side impact protection, Knee protection, A, B, C pillars, Instrument panel components, and Head restraints.
Helmet liners made of EPP
Most helmets today have liners made of EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), a great shock absorbing material, but it will be permanently compressed when absorbing an impact, even a minor one. Using multi-impact EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) as core material creates a helmet that will protect your head over and over again. To date, both traditional hard shell and in-mold helmets have relied on Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) for shock absorption. EPS absorbs energy by plastic deformation on impact and results in permanent deformation. As a consequence, a helmet liner made of EPS will not be as good absorbing repetitive impacts. It would be a trend that most bike helmets will use a liner of Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) instead of the traditional EPS. The difference between the materials is that EPP does not deform permanently, which means it’s suitable for absorbing repetitive impacts.
RC Hobby Model Planes made of EPP
Among the RC Hobby Model Plane industry, EPP has been intensively used and well known as its lightweight physical property, excellent resistance to impact and abrasion. EPP is well proven as a highly durable material for R/C aircraft. EPP is lightweight yet capable of flexing and returning to its given shape.  Squeeze it, punch it and you will not dent it.
Shock Pads made of EPP
EPP(Expanded Polypropylene) can be found in football/soccer stadiums, golf course, baseball field, tennis court and other sports field. Laid beneath the green turf fibers are several hundred shock pads which are made from EPP foam. Expanded Polypropylene represents a perfect basis for artificial turf. The EPP ground shock pads excel not only in their cushioning effect, they are ultra lightweight as well and can be transported everywhere low-cost and eco-friendly. EPP is a PP specialty foam with very good impact absorption, lightweight and big temperature resistance. It combines high energy absorption, even after several impacts, with excellent resilience and isotropic deformation performance. EPP is 100% recyclable. It is manufactured and processed without any CFCs(Chlorofluorocarbons). The EPP shock pads sub-layer basis can easily be cleaned or disinfected, it does not absorb water and is resistant to oils and chemicals. The EPP ground shock pads can also be assembled like tesseras without problems. In no time, a large basis for artificial turf is arising. The EPP foam shock pads underlay also minimizes the strains on players’ muscles and joints: it has been approved that the predominantly closed-cell, air-filled particles have a cushion factor of 2.6 to 2.8 based on test method ISO 4651- this is deemed to be gentle on the joints in the human skeleton. Due to these above mentioned attributes of EPP, the football fan wonders: Is the feathery EPP material really able to bear current and future football giants without difficulty? Of course. Using tremendous heat, the small evacuated plastic beads smelt into an extremely stable and solid material, which sustains every size of footballer without problems.
